Today is the last day for the Oculus Store Winter Sale which has huge discounts on many games for Oculus Rift, Samsung Gear VR and HTC Vive (via Revive). Here are the ones I’ve tried.
I have several of the games that are in the winter sale. I’ve arranged them approximately in the order that I like them (my taste leans toward casual games). Note: unless otherwise noted, buying the Gear VR version of a game will not give you the Rift version, and vice-versa.
OCULUS RIFT / HTC VIVE (before buying, pls. check for Revive compatibility):
- Superhot VR: take on an army of agents, as you control time to execute perfect attacks and dodges. I got the non-VR version of this game by accident on Steam and didn’t get a refund in time, so I was pretty annoyed about paying for it “again.” But when it went on sale I did get it, and it is indeed incredibly fun. If you have a Rift or Vive and you have any interest in action games, it’s a must-download.
- Damaged Core: one of my favorite VR games. It’s a first person shooter where you can hack into and take over your enemies. Review here.
- Space Pirate Trainer: the VR wave shooter that started it all. You use a variety of guns and an energy shield against waves of flying robots.
- Esper Collection: in this game, you are a telekinetic undergoing training as a secret agent. Solve puzzles by manipulating objects. Well-made and fun if you like puzzles.
- Anshar Wars 2: a third-person dogfight shooter (free if you already have the Gear VR version).
- The Climb: a rock climbing game with highly immersive environments.
- Castle Storm VR: a VR version of the eponymous mobile game.
- Hit Man Go VR. A puzzle game where you have to figure out a path that avoids detection or enables you to strike where an opponent is vulnerable. Very loosely based on the game of Go. The pieces are played on a detailed diorama that you can examine from any angle.
- Ultimate Booster: a VR version of a booster amusement park ride. Surprisingly immersive, I found it difficult to maintain my balance just standing!
- Chronos: a third person adventure set in an post-apocalyptic future. Beautiful environments.
- Dark Net: a strategy / puzzle game where you are a hacker stealing data.
- Fantastic Contraption: a physics puzzle game where you use a combination of simple components to create machines to move a ball to a target.
- Feral Rites: a hack and slash game where your character can transform into a beast.
- Holo Ball: a futuristic racquetball game.
- Serious Sam VR: a VR wave shooter based on the Serious Sam series.
- Smashing the Battle: a simple sci-fi hack and slash action game with two heroines.
- Poly Runner: a simple game where you fly a futuristic jet through obstacles.
- Project Cars: a VR racing game. Looks good but I got dizzy.
- Ocean Rift: a diving simulation VR app. I have the demo version on the Gear VR which looks pretty good, but on the Rift, it doesn’t look as impressive as The Blu.
- Drift: an interesting concept where you use your head movement to control an [impossible] bullet, avoiding obstacles until you find your target. It was quite immersive. However, there were two problems: on the Gear VR version, I got dizzy. Secondly, it was confusing to know where I was supposed to go to next. While I was using trial and error to determine where the game wanted me to go next, I was getting more and more dizzy.
SAMSUNG GEAR VR
- Drop Dead – a multiplayer zombie shooter. I was honestly surprised about how fun this game is. And no, it’s not scary (it’s more like an action game).
- Esper 2 – in this game, you are a telekinetic undergoing training as a secret agent. Solve puzzles by manipulating objects. Well-made and fun if you like puzzles.
- Eve Gunjack: a turret shooter.
- Anshar Wars 2: a third-person space dogfight shooter (if you get the Gear VR version, you’ll get the Rift version for free).
- Archer E Bowman: a bow-and-arrow tower defense wave shooter.
- Castle Storm VR: a VR version of the eponymous mobile game.
- Hit Man GO VR: A puzzle game where you have to figure out a path that avoids detection or enables you to strike where an opponent is vulnerable. Very loosely based on the game of Go. The pieces are played on a detailed diorama that you can examine from any angle.
- Darknet: a strategy / puzzle game where you are a hacker stealing data
- Photon Strike: a stylized strategy game where you command a fleet of spaceships.
- Land’s End: solve puzzles in an immersive adventure.
- Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes – an asymmetric party game. Defuse a bomb while your friends search through an instruction manual that only they can see.
- Wands: multiplayer wizard combat. More info here.
- Hypercade: updated VR versions of four arcade classics – Galaxian, Centipede, Breakout and Robotron.
- Bandit Six: a turret shooter similar to Eve Gunjack with a World War 2 theme.
- Smash Hit: on-rails shooter. Shoot balls into glass environments.
- Tactera: a strategy game similar to Starcraft, but in VR.
- Smashing the Battle: a simple sci-fi hack and slash action game with two heroines.
- Dream Flight: fly through fantastic environments synchronized to music. Beautiful but I got dizzy after a while.
- End Space: a highly acclaimed dogfight shooter. I couldn’t play it because I got dizzy.
