Insta360 EVO firmware update adds dynamic stitching (update with samples July 16, 2019)

Insta360 EVO stitching gets an upgrade

Insta360 just announced an update for the Insta360 EVO (reviewed here) that improves the stitching of the Insta360 EVO in 360 mode.  Here’s how it works.

Insta360 EVO is a hybrid VR180 and 360 camera with 5.7K resolution.  Although the EVO is a very capable camera, one of its weaknesses is the stitching in 360 mode, which often has very noticeable ghosting or other stitching errors.  The dynamic stitching update will result in smoother stitching.

The current stitching algorithm analyzes a scene and calibrates the stitching for that scene.  Unfortunately, if objects move closer or farther from the camera along the stitch line, then the calibrated stitch will no longer be optimal.  With dynamic stitching, the stitching is re-calibrated with every frame of the video.  This means that it is possible to get a smoother stitch even with objects that move along the stitch line.

Here is a sample without dynamic stitching:

Please note that this option is only on the iOS version of the app for now.  Dynamic Stitching will be added to the Android version soon.  I have also requested Insta360 to add this feature to Insta360 Studio 2019 (the desktop software) as well.  Meanwhile, if you want to try it out yourself, you can download the software here.  Please note you will need both the updated app and the firmware update.

  • I recently reached out to insta 360 customer support. Here is what they said “Dear Jeremy,

Thanks for contacting Insta360 Technical Support. Sorry for the trouble you had; We always strive to bring the same great features to Android and iOS users. The three features in our latest iOS update all have planned Android support. There is sometimes a delay in our Android development due to the wide variety of Android systems. We apologize for the inconvenience to you, and we will work hard to keep our pace up in the future.

If there is any other problem, please feel free to contact us again.

Looks like will have to wait til sometime this year hopefully. Mic Ty do did you get any response about the addition to adding this to the PC app? This would be a great feature as I was able to try it for iOS and the results were great.
