Best cheap Osmo Pocket tripod adapter (review and comparison)

One of the most common complaints against the Osmo Pocket (reviewed here) is that it lacks a 1/4-20 tripod hole.   If you want to use the Osmo Pocket with a tripod, the only official DJI accessory that has it is the extension handle (which is not yet available and will cost $69).  I think it’s DJI’s way of coercing users into buying the handle.

One alternative is to use a 3rd party tripod mount.  There are now a few of them on eBay and I tried one of them.  I also show a couple of other newer and cheaper alternatives.

Tripod adapter #1

Briefly, this one has so far seemed to work as advertised.  It holds the Osmo Pocket just by friction.  So far in my first day of use, it hasn’t loosened yet.  Inserting the OP into the tripod adapter does not require removing the smartphone connector.

The holder has a slot down the side that is supposed to give access to the Micro SD slot.  In actual use, it was very hard to remove the Micro SD card without removing the tripod adapter.

The base is wide enough to be stable on a desktop, and features a hole to access the USB port.

One disappointment was that the one I got had a plastic 1/4-20 tripod hole, which was annoying considering how expensive the mount is.  However, version 2.2 of the tripod adapter supposedly does include a metal tripod hole.

If you’d like to get this Osmo Pocket tripod adapter, it’s available here. But there are cheaper options (see below).

Tripod adapter #2

Here’s another tripod mount that costs much less. It looks very similar and also has a slot for the microphone.   But instead of a GoPro mount, it has a slot for a Osmo Pocket smartphone adapter.  This one has a plastic tripod hole.

Tripod adapter #3

Here’s a third tripod adapter that is the lowest cost in this comparison (under $8 shipped).  This one has a metal tripod hole and moreover has a thumbscrew to tighten the tripod adapter against the Osmo Pocket.  As with the first tripod adapter, this one also has a GoPro mount option, and has a hole in the bottom for the micro USB port.  However, there does not appear to be a hole for the bottom microphone.  Please note the tripod shown in the picture is NOT included.

I got this tripod adapter as well and I like it better than tripod adapter #1 because it feels more secure.  The interior has a rubber cover, and there is a little thumbscrew to secure it to the Osmo Pocket.  What I don’t like about this tripod adapter is that you can’t use it with the wireless adapter.

Tripod adapter #4 (side mount tripod adapter)

A fourth type of cheap tripod adapter for the Osmo Pocket is a metal bracket with tripod holes on the side.  At first, I was put off by the strange appearance, but after using it for a while, I found that it’s the one I like the best so far.  First, it’s fairly easy to insert.  I just loosen the thumbsrcew slightly and slide the adapter onto the Osmo Pocket (I don’t open the gate of the bracket).  I also love this adapter because unlike the others, it enables me to use the wireless adapter, which in my view is one of the most useful accessories for the Osmo Pocket.   This bracket is available from many vendors on Amazon and elsewhere.
