Big news for 360 cameras on August 23, 9pm ET
Big 360 camera-related announcement on August 23, 9pm ET

On August 23, 2021 at 9pm ET, check back here on 360 Rumors for a major announcement related to 360 cameras (not VR or FPV drones).  Don’t miss it!
P.S. Don’t bother downloading the sample picture.  The metadata has been stripped 🙂

UPDATE: IMHO, this news will make many people happy, while others won’t care.  I don’t think it will hurt anyone.

8/23 UPDATE: Here it is:

Several people have expressed disappointment that it’s not a 360 camera.  I said it’s “a major announcement related to 360 cameras (not VR or FPV drones).”  Next time, I’ll say 360 camera hardware or 360 camera software.

    • Considering how solid the MiSphere was for it’s price, I wish they’d release a new version with updated hardware.

I bought mine for £150 back in the day and it’s still an amazing piece of kit for it’s price and size.

It’s definitely not going to be that though but I can always dream.

          • First of all, thanks for all your support in the past. I want to share some facts with you and after that I’d like to know your opinion:

            1. Many people have told me that they want a standalone stitcher for Z1. At least a few said that requiring Lightroom was a dealbreaker for them.
            2. When I had an interview with Ricoh in March, I asked Ricoh to create a standalone stitcher. They said they would be willing to do that if enough people showed interest. I therefore invited viewers to comment on the video to show Ricoh that they want a standalone stitcher. Ricoh saw those comments and told me they would work on a standalone stitcher.

            3. Just a few days ago, Ricoh told me that they were finally done with the standalone stitcher. This gave me only a few days to do the video. I slept at 3am to finish editing the video.

            4. I have an NDA (nondisclosure agreement) with Ricoh. Some people told me they were about to buy a 360 camera but I couldn’t tell them about the standalone stitcher.

            5. In my article, I wrote, “check back here on 360 Rumors for a major announcement related to 360 cameras (not VR or FPV drones).”

            6. In the article and in response to some comments, I wrote, “this news will make many people happy, while others won’t care. I don’t think it will hurt anyone.”

            7. In the video I posted, I didn’t just announce the new stitcher. I also included a tutorial for editing 360 photos with Affinity Photo, I showed the limits of the stitcher and why stitching errors occur, and I showed how to get around those limits with PTGui.

            8. By comparison, Insta360 has described a change in app interface as a “big update.”

Based on all these facts, here’s my question: In your opinion, with respect to the teaser announcement and the video itself, do you think I took from the 360 community more than I gave back to the 360 community? This is not a rhetorical question. I honestly want to know.

          • I was a bit rude in my original comment, apologies.

I understand your enthusiasm of your achievement to get this app developed, however with the teaser expectation management could have been better as also other viewers have commented.

As I am not a Z1 user and do not intend to become one having swapped my Theta V for an Insta360 One R, as I am more into video. Therefore I was looking forward to the news which in the end appeared to be irrelevant to me.

Please keep up the good work though. I hope your next updates will be about a new generation of improved consumer 360 cameras.

  • Hi Mic, I’m sure that in a Post with image, in the near past you were gleefully excited about a box that was delivered that had the company name prominent.
I can’t find that post now so may be wrong but won’t utter the name here,
Will be interesting if it is that company with a new model but I’m Hoping that it will be the Aleta S3 that you rumoured back in January and has disappeared from the 360 world.
Anyway, look forward to your announcement and more of updated wee FPV etc Droneland that you have been pushing, thanks, very informative.

  • It is a pity that it will not be Insta360 one R or GoPro MAX 2. With its side, GoPro should really rethink the “modular” camera, because this is really the future. Since they had to withdraw Session for patent reasons, many people expect something smaller than the GoPro Hero. With its side, Insta360 in the next generation ONE R should think about some overlay with a battery for the 4k module to make it a cube camera like a session.

    • What a let down. He lead people to believe there was a new camera just to try and get clicks. This is dishonest and a really crappy thing to do. Pathetic.

        • You could have easily said ‘ its not a new camera’ which wouldnt have breached the NDA. But no. You lead people on. Was it worth it?

          • I said it’s “360 camera news” and not news about VR or FPV. I said many people will be happy while others won’t care. IF there is a next time, I’ll say 360 camera hardware or 360 camera software.

      • I agree. I have been to this site for many many years. But I am sick with his sensationalism for almost nothing. I will stop visiting his site from now.

      • I rarely comment on websites but you need this. I have been following this website for a couple years because I trusted your opinions.

This teaser was an epic fail. Just because you note “not VR or FPV drones” doesn’t mean it’s not a camera and knowing your 360° knowledge we know that you know most don’t use 360° cameras for VR or FPV drones. It’s really hard to believe that you would think that we would rule out it’s a new camera based on that note. After seeing your post on the software I still looked back a couple of times to see what the big news was going to be. You said “a major announcement related to 360 cameras” not camera software. If you would of said software you would probably not have so many people disappointed in you . I am sure there are so many more than just those who are making comments.
I know you want people to revisit your site, I understand. People have been coming back to your site because they trust your knowledge on 360 cameras. They see how much you enjoy them and know about them. This article comes across as if you are changing to where clicks are getting more important. The best way to regain trust is to admit you screwed up. Writing a long statement on why you are right and some just misread your post will not work in regaining trust.
There are other dependable 360 camera websites out there. Your site has always been a favorite. I hope you take this seriously. I don’t want this site to fall to the wayside.

  • What a scam, designed just to get traffic on your site. You misled people to think it was a new camera. This is dishonest quite frankly.

  • Hello,
frankly I like reading your tests, 360 news and sharing your passion, but your sensationalism is unbearable.
Personally, I look forward to an 8k Theta Z2, this is the future.

    • Thanks Frederic. Unfortunately, this is the only way this site can be viable. Google does not automatically find the most valuable and useful information. Rather it considers factors such as CTR. Therefore I cannot describe things in the absolutely simplest and fact-of-the-matter way. Until Google improves, we all have to put up with this crap (I hate it too).

      • I think there is a theme in the comments from different readers. I would suggest to reflect on how to approach this differently next time.

It is already good that you acknowledge this teaser was crap. Feed people crap too many times and they will find their meals elsewhere in the future.

Short time gain, long term loss.

  • This news did not warrant a teaser. The worthiness of the news should stand on its own. You should have just announced it when your NDA expires. As others have expressed, this was one huge disappointment.
