How would you like to create a 3D floor plan for your virtual tour?  Leica BLK3D can create 3D floor plans using a feature they call Smart Room.  Here’s a demo.

Leica BLK3D is a handheld device that can measure distances accurately using a pair of cameras and computer vision.  It also has a laser rangefinder that can be used, among other things, to create 3D floorplans with a feature called Smart Room.  Here’s a video of how it works:

The BLK3D is available for $4750 from Leica.   There is another product that can also do 3D floorplans but is much more affordable, called Archisketch.  I’ll be posting a review of Archisketch.

  • For $4750 it seems like it should be able to do a bit more automation.

It needs to be on a motorized gimbal tripod, let me set it in a room and do the legwork itself.

      • We have a BLK360, and while it does have some intelligence built in, it uses sheer force by blasting all surfaces with billions of points to collect that sort of data. The newer model RTC360 has some neat features in VIS that are starting to approach the intelligence aspect but it is far more expensive.

I still want something in between. Smaller, simpler, smarter. Machine learning is already recognizing objects within photographs, surely feeding it dimensional data would make it more precise. Once it understands what it is looking at, store it as a low-cost 3d model representation rather than trillions of point cloud points.

Don’t mind me, I’m just the kid in the backseat repeatedly asking “are we there yet.” 🙂
I guess I should get back to registering all these blasted point clouds *pun intended*
