Insta360’s sleek new carbon fiber selfie stick: designed for the next Insta360 One X?

Insta360 has released a carbon fiber selfie stick accessory!  How does it differ from the invisible selfie stick?  And could it be a hint as to the next Insta360 One X?

Selfie sticks and monopods are essential accessories for 360 cameras.  Not only can they be used as a stand like regular tripods, but they can be used to create an invisible flying camera effect.

The ideal selfie stick for 360 cameras is ‘invisible’ to the camera (i.e., narrow enough to fit between the lenses of a camera, and remains perfectly in line with the camera), is durable yet lightweight, and is portable.  Insta360’s original Invisible Selfie Stick is a monopod that fit many of these characteristics.  Insta360 later created a second generation selfie stick with a narrower tip so that it would be invisible with narrower cameras such as the Insta360 One X.

How does the new carbon fiber selfie stick compare to the Invisible Selfie Stick?  As with the Invisible Selfie Stick, the Carbon Fiber stick has a narrow tip and has no ballhead ensuring it remains in line and invisible to 360 cameras.  It also has a standard 1/4-20 tripod hole in the bottom, to which you can attach tripod legs such as the Multi-purpose Tripod Stand.

The Carbon Fiber selfie stick has 4 segments (including the handle), collapses to 26cm, expands to 116cm, and has a weigh of 95 grams.  By contrast, the Invisible Selfie Stick has 5 segments (including the handle), collapses to 28.5cm, and expands to 120cm, and has a weight of 162 grams.

In terms of stiffness, carbon fiber is generally stiffer than aluminum, therefore the Carbon Fiber selfie stick is probably stiffer than the Invisible Selfie Stick.  This means that it is less likely to bend or flex.

Designed For the Next Insta360 One X?

Based on the specifications, the Carbon Fiber selfie stick offers similar features to the Invisible Selfie Stick.  Besides the weight, the biggest difference is probably the Carbon Fiber selfie stick’s extra stiffness, which is an advantage, but the One X is already one of the lightest 360 cameras, and the Invisible Selfie Stick is strong enough to support its weight.  Could the Carbon Fiber selfie stick be designed for a new, heavier 360 camera?  If so, could the heavier 360 camera support a larger sensor and with it, larger lenses?   Or maybe I’m reading too much into it.  What do you think?  Let me know in the comments!

  • Hello Mic,

I am sure you have additional info about an upcoming Insta360 camera, that you don’t want (or are not allowed) to share with us, or am I wrong ?

  • It looks to have locking rings which will be a big improvement over the ‘twist and hope’ arrangement they currently use (I have six of them!!)

  • > One X is already one of the lightest 360 cameras
And one of the heaviest in venture case. 😀 Would like to get it to use with venture case once it’ll appear on amazon.

Wish to see new X announce this year.

  • Hello Mic,
the selfiestick is outstanding. Why is the thread to close and open contrary to the normal direction. If I want to attach the camera, I open the stick

  • Are these available in the USA anywhere yet, or is it going to take month to make it through their painfully slow supply chain?

  • I lost my invisible selfie stick recently on a trip! :/ Do you recommend buying this new carbon fiber? Would it be an upgrade? Is it worth losing a few inches?

    • Hi Hugo. Sorry to hear that. TBH I like the invisible selfie stick better because the new carbon fiber selfie stick has an opposite twisting direction to lock and unlock. It is confusing.

      • Hi Mic Ty, I have quite the opposite opinion about the twisting direction. In Rain/Water/Snow my invisible stick always getting stuck after collapsing it. I really can’t get a grip to open it again and needed pliers to open it. Do you got any of these moisture problems bevor or is it maybe my stick?!

With the new stick I can just “tighten the OneX” a bit more and get it unstuck by hand (but I am wondering if I will get the OneX off again :o)

  • May I ask why you designed the thread to close and open contrary to the normal direction? it so confusing that I prefer to use another stick. Could you manufacturer the oposite threads instead?

    • I would also like to add that the lock icons and arrows that you show in the stick are wrong. You show a right arrow towards a closed lock, and in the reality, if you rotate that section to the right, it unlocks the stick!!
