Insta360 One R non-swiveling GoPro tripod mount adapter (3D printer STL file)

Non-swiveling GoPro tripod mount for Insta360 One R

If you have an Insta360 One R (reviewed here), this non-swiveling GoPro tripod mount adapter can keep your selfie stick invisible.

Insta360 One R: 30 features and disadvantages

The Insta360 One R is a modular 360 camera that converts to an action cam.  Because it is sometimes used as an action cam, it has a GoPro-compatible fork mount, which can swivel.  GoPro claims that their swiveling mount can not only help you aim your camera at your subject, but can also reduce damage to the camera if it falls.

However, when the GoPro mount is used on a 360 camera such as the Insta360 One R, GoPro Max, or Rylo, the swiveling mount can make it harder to use of the most powerful features of a 360 camera, which is capturing a third person view (the invisible flying camera effect).

360 cameras have the unique capability to capture a third person view, as though shot with an invisible flying camera.  To use this effect, you simply have to use a selfie stick or monopod that is slimmer than the distance between the 360 camera’s lenses, and you should keep the selfie stick inline with the 360 camera.

However, with a swiveling GoPro mount, the 360 camera can swivel out of alignment with the 360 camera, making the selfie stick visible.

One solution is to use a non-swiveling GoPro adapter, which ensures that the selfie stick will remain in-line with the camera.  Insta360 created one, which I showed in my video with 15 Tips for the Insta360 One R.  But somehow, they stopped after a rather short production.  I’ve asked them about its future availability but they only said they’ll get back to me (that was a month ago).

Meanwhile, here is a 3D printed non-swiveling adapter generously shared by Mark Anthony Szymura.  I haven’t tried it out myself, but here’s a photo posted on thingiverse that seems to show that it will work.

In addition to 3D printing the adapter, you’ll need to add a 1/4-20 tripod hole and a 1/4-20 nut.  What do you think of this tripod adapter?  Let me know in the comments!

  • If you hear of production starting back up for the non-swivel mount or hear of any other source for the mount or someone who can fabricate, via 3D printing the mount please let us know. I don’t have the ability to pint one myself. I would be happy to purchase one. Thanks, Scott

    • Hey there Scott. You can download the STL file and print it through shapeways or other 3D printing services that can print it and mail it for you.

      • Hey Mic, Thanks for the rapid reply. I’ll see if I can track down someone who has a 3D printer.

        I have one more question,

I was opening up my new Insta360 one R for the first time today and upon starting it up, I pushed on the button for English, at least I thought I did but about half of the text on screen is Chinese characters. The second page of the short cut icons is all Chinese. Is there some way I can reset the camera and try again? I went through the manual and didn’t find anything.

Thanks very much for your help,
        Scott Allman

        • Hi Scott. That’s not supposed to happen. Did you buy your One R from an authorized distributor? (If not, you may have problems activating it.)

          • Thanks for the reply. I bought it through Amazon… I know, I’m sorry I didn’t buy it through you. It is activated, I just can’t read half of the on screen text. Isn’t there any way to do a “factory reset” and bring it back to start? Most cameras have this option…

          • Hi Scott. You could try changing the language to English:
            1. From the main screen, swipe down for the settings.
            2. Swipe left to go to the second page and tap on the cog / gear for more settings.
            3. Tap on the first option for General settings.
            4. Tap on the third option from the bottom for Language and choose English.

I don’t see an in-camera menu option for factory reset.

            Best regards,
            Mic

      • Mic, I can try to use your directions as a map, since everything is in Chinese… I don’t want to make things worse.
        Thanks for the suggestion.
        Scott

        • Mic, OMG!!!! After clicking on many buttons I couldn’t read, I must have hit the right combination and the word English… in English, appeared. Success!!!! I owe you a beer or sake or something… Thanks for taking the time to help me!

          • Thanks Scott! I’m glad it’s resolved. The biggest help for me is when you share my photos and videos 😀

    • Hi Brian. Just upload the model to a 3d printing service such as Sculpteo or Shapeways. Then have them print it.
