Are you getting the Insta360 One X2?  Here are the accessories you need and the ones you don’t.  Also: if you ae waiting for a Black Friday discount for Insta360 One X2 ($429) here’s the news.  Insta360 is indeed going to have a Black Friday sale, but the One X2 is selling very well and rumor has it that there will be no discount on Insta360 One X2 nor will there be free accessories.  Of course that can change, but that’s the best information I have right now.  However, there will be discounts for other products, such as Insta360 One R and possibly other cameras as well.

Now here are the Insta360 One X2 accessories you should get and the ones you probably don’t need.

If you’re getting the One X2, you should order the accessories you need together with it to save on shipping.  Otherwise, buying accessories individually can cost up to $18 in shipping, and most of these accessories aren’t available on Amazon yet (as of the time of this writing).  Here are the accessories you should buy and the ones you probably don’t need.

  1. Microphone adapter: highly recommended.  This will let you use a lav mic or external microphone for clearer audio.  Essential for vlogging.
  2. Extra battery: recommended.  The X2 has a long battery life of a bit less than 80 minutes, but this battery is not yet available elsewhere.
  3. Utility Frame: this cage for the One X2 adds two cold shoes, which you’ll need to attach the Rode Wireless Go or other microphone but is kind of bulky and pricey ($49).  Instead, check out the cold shoe (see below).
  4. Cold shoe: this accessory attaches in between the X2 and your selfie stick, and is a convenient way to add a cold shoe.  IMHO, it’s a better choice than the Utility Frame.
  5. Lens guard: highly recommended.  Beats having to replace your camera from a broken lens.
  6. Quick charger: recommended.  Let’s say you have a trip tomorrow and you have two or three batteries.  Are you going to charge them one by one, and keep coming back to charge each one?  Having a quick charger can not only charge faster, but can charge multiple batteries.  You can do without it, but it’s really much more convenient to have it.
  7. Bullet time cord: I don’t have this accessory but if you like the bullet time effect, I personally prefer the bullet time handle because I can spin it at any speed (I don’t have to spin it fast enough to stay in the air) and I feel the bullet time handle is safer.  Here’s a comparison of the bullet time cord vs bullet time selfie stick by DC Gerry.
  8. Multi-purpose tripod: tripod legs are very useful and are required for virtual tours.  But I prefer the MT-02 tripod legs, or if you want legs that work very well in uneven terrain the Leofoto MT-03 (they’re very compact, and work very well in uneven surfaces, but they’re expensive and they’re not very wide).
  9. Dive case: if you want clear underwater photos or videos, then this is the only way to get it (other than through a 360bubble or similar dive case).
  10. Back bar: if you have a bike, scooter, skateboard, etc., the back bar is a great accessory for hands-free footage.  But it’s also available on Amazon Prime, so you don’t have to decide right away to get it from Insta360.
  11. One X2 Carry Case: this is a new custom case for the X2.  It’s pretty good but I prefer my Lowepro Portland 30, which can be used for any other 360 camera, and also has a belt loop that can be unfastened without removing my belt.

  • My two X2’s shipped out today. Can you tell me if the GoPro external mic adapter will work with the X2? I am sure hoping so because it was $50 for that one. I ordered the lens guards as well but they won’t ship out until Dec.

    Thanks for the write up.

      • Mic, I got one of my X2’s in yesterday. This thing is VERY HOT. The first one X did not get hot like this. Is this common? If I was videoing outside on a hot day in the sun, it would overheat no doubt about it. Going to get my thermal camera and check the temp. it is on the back side behind the color display.

Took it out today to do a video review on a dog leash I recently purchased. It recorded for about 1:30 and then stopped recording. I had no idea it had stopped since I had it mounted to my Segway while I was taking the dog on a run.

        • Hi TJ. Mine gets hot if I record for a long time. It may have stopped if it overheated, or you ran out of memory or ran out of battery, or voice command was turned on and it misheard something (which happens frequently imho).

          • we are in the early part of the winter season so it was actually a cool day when I recorded. I see the heat as a very big problem when recording in the summer. I am surprised that no one has mentioned this. this seems very problematic to me

I will turn the voice command features off, and do more testing. but I’ll just be honest I’m not feeling the warm and fuzzies over this camera at the moment.

          • I have owned the Insta360 Pro V1 and the Insta360 One X so I am not NOT new to Insta360. I was actually very happy with both of those cameras. I have sold both of them (did not need the Pro and was thought the X2 would be a nice upgrade.

I am very disappointed! It seems clear to me that all the hype and videos are from people (lots of them) who will simply make commission revenue on the sale of this camera. So unfortunately money has come before truth. I will begin making videos to let people know what they are getting (ripped off) and not getting (a good camera)!!

        • Another possibility is if it got stuck / crashes, sometimes it can appear unresponsive but will actually keep processing internally. You’ll know if it is stuck if it appears to be off yet is getting hotter. The solution is to remove the battery and reinsert it.

          • When setting the Region in settings (if you do not wish to use Auto) United States is not an option (United States Islands and United States Virgin Islands) but NO United States.

          • So I just did a firmware update (using android). I showed I was on 1.4.3. But after the upgrade, it still shows 1.4.3 up top but the FW version shows 1.0.8. What is the most recent FW for the X2?

          • It has been recording for a little over 5 minutes. The camera back is at 124°. I am in a 74° room. If it was 90° outside it would be toast. The camera is not hung or crashed. it is still recording. I just stopped the recording. The only problem is the excessive heat. This is not right! I guarantee all of them do this.

  • No discount – no X2 for me.
With the vertical battery the One R is nearly the same. No need to add the X2 at this price level.
A discount for the 1-inch single module would be nice so that I could upgrade my One R. 🙂

  • Hi
Could you please explain how to set up the X2 for the “Star Lapse” mode?
Also I am unable to activate the X2 using the remote’s bluetooth “wake up”. (worked fine on the X).

Thanks for a great channel, Happy Thanksgiving
    Zvi

  • Mic Ty, Thanks for the X2 review. I’m getting mixed messages from Insta360 and SmallRig having contacted them both. Small rig who make the utility frame say the sticky lens covers ‘should work’ with the utility frame. Insta360 say they are not compatible and the utility frame may damage the sticky lens!! I can not find any web information on anyone who has put the two together. Can you tell me if they work together? I know I would have to ditch the silicon lens protector that comes with the utility frame but thats ok. Need maximum protection. Thanks in advance

    • Hey there Antony. I have the smallrig frame but I don’t have the One X2 protective lens covers. Nonetheless, I don’t see any reason why you couldn’t use the sticky lens covers for the One X2 together with the Smallrig frame. It’s possible Insta360 staff misunderstood you and thought you meant the silicone rubber cover for the One X2 (which cannot fit over the Smallrig frame). I hope that helps!

      Best regards,
      Mic
