Invisible microphone mount for Insta360 One X2 and other 360 cameras

There’s now an invisible external microphone mount for Insta360 One X2 that can also work with other 360 cameras.  UPDATE: it’s a new version of the Insta360 One X2 cold shoe (also called Ulanzi PT-20 mount).  How does this solve the problem?  Find out in this post.

One issue with 360 cameras is that the camera is usually somewhat far from the user, which is not good for audio quality.  Some cameras such as the Insta360 One R and One X2 can use Apple Airpods or bluetooth microphones such as Samsung Galaxy Buds, but the audio quality is not as good as an external microphone.  There are also 360 cameras with mic jacks, and there are wireless microphones.

Of the wireless microphones I’ve tried, the best sound is the Rode Wireless Go.  The problem with the Rode Wireless Go and other wireless microphones such as is how to mount it in a way that is invisible to the 360 camera.  To make matters worse, the Rode Wireless Go uses a bright red coiled cable that is very difficult to keep in the stitch line.

Fortunately, Ulanzi has now created a new accessory that lets you mount the Rode Wireless Go securely and invisibly to the Insta360 One X2 or other 360 cameras.  It’s called the PT-20.  The kit also includes a cable that is short enough and stiff enough to stay within the stitch line.   Here’s a hands-on preview by Yuqing Guo.

The Ulanzi PT-20 is now available for $19.99 from Insta360’s website.

  • Ouch! 199$ for Rode, and 20$ for Ulanzi…. Good to know they exist, but I think that using “anything”, attached to the subject, for recording the audio, and then mount and sync later, is much cheaper ! 😉

    • Thanks Sergio. Syncing the audio with video is ok but I find it confusing to keep track of files belong to which videos. So to save time, I always shoot with a camera that has mic input. 😀

  • Does anyone know where I can get that short cable with that configuration? I have a 6″ & I can’t twist/tape it enough to keep it out of frame? Insta360 has it on their website included w/ the cold shoe mount & it’s $15…. with $18 shipping. (must come in a really nice box?)
I can’t find that configuration online anywhere in 3-4″.
    Anyone?
    Thanks!
