Kandao Qoocam 8K sample video and photos in full resolution: worth the hype?

Kandao Qoocam 8K sample video and sample photos

Here is an analysis of the Kandao Qoocam 8K’s image quality, based on the first sample video and sample photos posted by Kandao.  On November 7, 2019, Kandao surprised the 360 camera industry with the  Qoocam 8K, the world’s first 8K consumer 360 camera.  However, there were no actual sample videos or sample photos at the launch.  This led to questions about the Qoocam’s actual image quality.

This week, Kandao released the first 360 video and 360 photos from the Qoocam 8K.  Here is an analysis of the image quality from those samples, reframed as a non-360 video.  I also discuss what it’s like to edit 8K videos, and I offer two suggestions to make 8K editing easier.

  • Hi Mic,

Love the videos, can you clarify for me if the lenses have a removable and replaceable cover built in? Or is that a separate cover like the go pro max protective lenses?

    Thanks!

  • Hi Mic,

I’ve asked for detailed specs of the 8K, here they are:

    ISO 100-6400
    photo shutter 1/6400s-60s
    video shutter: 30fps:1/6400s-1/30s
    60fps:1/6400s-1/60s
    120fps:1/6400s-1/120s,
    mono mic

    Cheers

    Jacques

    • It’s disappointing to me that it’s a mono mic. Not surprising, as I think that was mentioned a while ago, but still disappointing. I hope the input is stereo, at least, but 360 audio would have been fantastic.

  • So now I’m worried- I mean not really, because the IQ looks good either way, but the fact that the downsampled 5.7k footage looks so close in quality to the 8K, my take away from this video is that it may not really be 8k, but upsampled to 8K from some in-between resolution. Which is hard to swallow from a camera sold as 8K.
Can’t wait to see some more footage!

    • Hi Brian. All it means is that the detail can almost fit on a 5.7K video. Theoretically, if you have perfect lenses and a perfect sensor, then it is possible to get similar quality with 5.7K but in the real world, that is impossible. Anyway, in the end what matters is the actual detail. In that regard, the qoocam level of detail is similar to 8K professional cameras I’ve used.
