Photoshop CC now supports 360 photo editing. You’ll be able to view 360 photos in 360 rectilinear view (as opposed to a warped equirectangular panorama), which will make it much easier to make local changes to the photo such as removing the tripod from the nadir, or adding text or graphics anywhere in the 360 photo without distortion.  Check out this demo:

Here is a more detailed tutorial by Tony Redhead (thanks to Jim Jensen of Google Photo Sphere Community for sharing this tutorial).

Adobe has been steadily adding 360 capabilities to Creative Cloud.  Most recently, Adobe acquired Mettle and made their Skybox plugins available to all Creative Cloud subscribers.  With the native support for 360 photos in Photoshop CC, Adobe is making CC even more compelling for 360 photo and video professionals.  Adobe’s software for photographers (Photoshop, Lightroom) is $9.99 per month, but if you or your child are a student or teacher, you can get a CC subscription with the Education price, $19.99 per month (click on Students and Teachers) for all the programs in Creative Cloud, including Premiere, After Effects, Photoshop, Lightroom, etc.

  • A good alternative for those, like myself, who do not like the Adobe subscription model is Affinity Photo. It’s had 360 capabilities for a while.

    • I think you would be hard pressed to find anyone who likes the Adobe subscription model except for the management of Adobe.

Unfortunately many of us use a variety of Adobe applications including Premiere, After Effects, Illustrator and Photoshop to name just a few. So this news is great for those of us who need the applications available via a subscription. I’ve been playing around with the functionality for a couple of days and there are certainly some limitations but all in all I think it will be great for those who’s workflow fits within it’s capabilities.

My personal favourite is the non-destructive workflow enabled by the use of Smart Objects. They do have an overhead in update time; however the fact that you can create templated .psd files containing objects and effects etc and simply swap out the equirectangular image is quite interesting. I’m not sure if you can do the same in Affinity but if they do it’s great.

  • Can’t you just edit your photo with the other app and then upload the edited photo when you check in? I have my settings set such that the Untappd editor doesn’t even open once I’ve selected my photo.
I guess this may not work if you take photos within the app itself, but it’s easily bypassed otherwise.

    • Hi Milan. I don’t understand. This feature lets you edit a 360 photo in a 360 view in realtime. If you use a 3rd party app, it doesn’t seem like it would be in real time, besides being less convenient. I hope this answers your question. Best regards, Mic
