First 3D 360 video in Space by National Geographic and Vuze camera

National Geographic presented the first 3D 360 video in space, from aboard the International Space Station. Here’s the amazing video:

To view the video in 3D, you’ll need to use Google Cardboard or a similar VR headset.

The video was captured by European Space Agency astronaut Paolo Nespoli with the Vuze VR Camera, which was the first and still the most affordable and compact 3D 360 camera for consumers, and which was recently updated to add exposure control and other features.

According to Vuze manufacturer Humaneyes, National Geographic and NASA selected the Vuze after “a rigorous vetting process to ensure that it passed fire  hazard, battery and numerous other safety tests.”  Vuze is available on Amazon for $799.

What do you think of the video?  Let me know in the comments!

  • Nice 🙂 Perhaps the first 3D 360 from space, but certainly not the first 360 from space. These are also very much worth watching, amazing stuff:

  • Amazing content! This is exactly what 360 VR video does best – giving an immersive experience that takes you somewhere you could never go.

Unfortunately, this wonderful video is marred by the horrible stereo and stitching of the Vuze camera. I have yet to see any output from the Vuze that didn’t look really bad. I wish they had taken a better camera up there. Still, this video is a must see. 🙂

    • “Unfortunately, this wonderful video is marred by the horrible stereo and stitching of the Vuze camera”

I could not agree more. When the Vuze was in development, I could not wait for it to be available. But when I saw the first sample clips, my dreams were shattered. Resolution is bad and the stitching atrocious. One wonders why they chose the cheapest camera to take on a space mission. They should have at least chosen an Insta360 Pro. Nowadays they could take a Titan or the latest Zcam V1 for a much better 3D 360 experience.

Well, you can exclude standalone Nibiru headsets from the lot. It use to be that 3D 360 was displayed on YT the most logical way – as an over/under stereo pair. But for a while now YT displays them as four cut-up vertical bands for no other reason than to make them incompatible with non-Google viewers. When companies go to some pointless effort to render content incompatible with other platforms, you know it’s not going to go far.

    • I need to correct that last statement. After further experimentation, I found that some downloaders pick up the vertical bands I mentioned while others do download the over/under version even though that version does not show on the YT interface.
