One of the best accessories for the GoPro MAX is a permanent 1/4-20 tripod mount to replace its folding GoPro mount. Here’s why and how to replace it.
The GoPro Max (reviewed here) comes with a foldable GoPro mount, just like the Hero8. The issue is that 360 cameras are almost always used in line with the selfie stick to make the selfie stick invisible. The Max’s GoPro mount creates several problems. First, most 360 shooters have monopods that have a standard 1/4-20 tripod connector which is what almost all 360 cameras use. With a MAX or Fusion, the 360 shooter has to attach a GoPro to 1/4-20 adapter. Second, when attaching the Max to the monopod, we have to make sure it is in line with the selfie stick. Third, if we shake the monopod, the Max can swivel out of line from the selfie stick, making the selfie stick visible.
Fortunately, you can replace the GoPro mount on the Max with a standard 1/4-20 tripod hole. The kit includes a Torx star shaped allen key to remove the existing GoPro mount and replace it with the tripod hole, which fits the Max perfectly, although it protrudes from the Max’s body slightly. I assume they designed it that way to make the hole deep enough for a secure tripod connection.
I never realized before how much of a convenience the tripod hole is, until I noticed that I feel a sense of relief every time I attach the Max to a selfie stick and I remember that I don’t have to use the GoPro mount. If you have a Max, you absolutely must get this accessory.
My problem with this type of mounts is when i have a Stick which is like the Insta One X – where you have to rotate to extend…I have to take care that you don ´t detach the Camera itself.

Thanks reppmic. You might be interested in the insta360 One R selfie stick, which is just pull or push (no twisting). It is also pocketable. But it is much shorter. Almost half the length of the One X selfie stick.

Hi Simon. Sorry this only works with MAX. The Fusion’s gopro mount is removable but I haven’t found a 1/4-20 tripod hole for it.

This accessory f**Ed up my GoPro mount. Have to replace the whole camera. If you push a little too hard, your camera is done.
What do you mean? I have installed it on Hero 8, 9, 10 and Max and none have had any issues. How did it F up your gopro mount? What do you mean ‘push too hard’?
