Photos of the next Insta360 camera have supposedly been leaked by Japanese rumor site Nokishita Camera, and it’s supposed to be called Insta360 One R (update: now reviewed here with FAQ).
I’ve previously talked about the next Insta360 camera and its features. Now Nokishita Camera claims to have a photo. The photo is a CG render showing a modular design of a camera that looks similar to a GoPro Hero.
One thing to note is that based on my insider info, the next Insta360 camera is waterproof. If this camera is modular, it seems to make it less likely to be waterproof. On the other hand, the insider did say that it’s not a replacement for the Insta360 One X, and this camera would be so different from the One X that it could be sold alongside the One X.
What do you think? Is this photo real? Sound off in the comments!
When will the new camera be available to order? When will it ship?
It will be officially revealed on January 7, 2010, 6am Pacific Time, and will be available to order immediately. It will ship “soon” thereafter.
January 5, 2020 update:
New teaser trailer is a 360 aerial video
Here is the trailer for the new camera, and my reaction and analysis:
Insta360 posted this photo on their social media, and the red and black color scheme, seems to give more credence to this photo, and the puzzle scheme plus the tagline “adapt to the action” would make sense for a modular camera like the one shown in the CG render.
Nokishita no lie 😎
They have a good track record.
Interesting concept and 1″ sensor… Let’s see what they are targeting with it.
Sharp eyes, my friend!
What is the release date of new Insta 360 camera? Isn’t it 29th December?
My insider info said only December and there are 2 days left 🙂
Render fits the images included in the FCC report about label(s) & location(s).
FCC ID: 2AFSH-CINORAH-A
Maybe they came up with a genius way of waterproofing a modular system?
ooohhhh! the plot thickens!
So it looks like 2 modules can link side by side so possibly a VR180 mode?
I hope this is 8k
Wow! Probably it could act as a 360 camera, a 3d 180 camera or as 2 separate 180 cameras, without moving parts that could possibly get weak and break!
that would be cool wouldn’t it! Let’s see!
Fabio: Yes ! A 3D mount will be introduced in February for shooting both regular 3D and VR180 ! 🙂
I have some solid insider information and this fits the picture perfectly.
Renders also align very well with placements of labels and so on in the FCC report that Felipe linked below.
Interestingly it looks like it will have changeable lenses/filters but the large one in the render would obviously make a 180 configuration impossible.
Guessing the large lens has a 190 plus FOV so when the 2 are linked it produces 360. Insta360 could be going for a kind of all in one solution for consumers here, 1 lens config similar to GoPro, side by side 180, and 360.
My own reading of the pictures above is that they show three different lens modules. However, I agree they could also be showing lens hood or filters. The problem is that if the image at the left is showing a lens hood on a 180 degree lens, it will seriously cut into the FOV. That’s why I am inclined to believe this lens is actually not fish-eye.
But then anyhow, the hood would stick out making it difficult to mount two close together…
Very curious to learn more about this unusual design.
Assuming these photos are real, you might be right! we’ll see!
Good theory! Let’s see!

Actually, when you see the 3D mount they designed for it, ALL camera modules will fit including the Leica version.
Whatever it is, this looks to be designed for 3D 180 and… regular 3D and… bullet-time – more so than 360.
If you look at the lenses, we are shown three different lens modules that look to be three different focal lengths. That is of much more use for regular 3D and bullet-time and actually of no use to 360.
Sure one can shoot 360 with one camera pointed in the opposite direction, but this design seems optimized much more for shooting regular 3D, 3D 180 and bullet-time.
If this is real, it may be the camera system I have been waiting for !
woohoo! let’s see!
The mistery deepens even more now as the mail came from Insta360, stating the new camera (confirmed to be 1″) is a mix between actioncam, compact camera and…drone(?!). A separate “module” which is a drone? I always wondered if the new DJI Mavic Mini could carry the insta360 one X. And as it’s not made to carry payload, of course I couldn’t find this info anywhere. Having an “own miniature drone” would solve the situation. Remains to be seen what real specs it has, as nowadays the really important seems to be resolution (8k+) and the dynamic range. The rest are small details.
There are videos on YT of people who have put a Insta360 One X from a Mini. It works.
Please let it be VR180 🙂
This would be so awesome and just what I’ve been looking for, VR180 1“, so cool. Modular, compact, and drone-carryable..let’s hope for the best, guys.
I would return the Evo I just recently bought and get my hands on this bad boy 🙂
Will this camera have issues with stitching in 360 mode considering the two lenses will be offset by a significant amount compared to other 360 cameras that have each camera lens directly behind each other?
I bet that the photo is a real representation of the camera the parts look similar to the puzzle pieces on Insta360 Website.
The first module above the drone + the second module below the drone = invisible drone?
An insider who worked in Shenzhen R&D of insta360 claimed that the following will be revealed in a few days:
1. The release of this insta360 is a drone with 2 squared framed propellers attached for short range flying
2. It will feature a 4K resolution similar to the original insta360 OneX
3. It has greatly improved on the previously bad night mode which insta360 cameras had previously
4. It will be controlled by a smartphone with no controller
5. It has 360 capabilities and 360 3D video capture
6. The drone feature can be dismounted from the camera
7. It will feature incredibly smart flying video camera mode in app
8. It will be compatible with their insta360 OneX invisible selfie stick
There are some things wrong here.
Wait and see 🙂
I also heard that it will have little wheels that spring out of the bottom so it can ride along on terrain and even has a tracker so it can follow your dog running ! :-O
Insta Rape GoPro. thanks god i dont buy GoPro Max!
I think we will see:
1: 1″ sensor module with 14mm f3.2 lens (one with big round lens)
2: 360 module (one with small round lens next to LCD)
3: “action cam” module, probably only one water resistant (one with square lens)
4: LCD module that attach to all other lens modules, there will probably be memory card inside, you can mount lcd in both direction for selfie mode or normal shooting with regular non 360 lens module.
5: Power module with connectors for LCD module, probably battery
If you combine lens module (1/2/3) with lcd and power module you get camera similar to gopro max. I just hope you would be able to use only lens modules.
6: ? small, very thin drone with internal propellers that fits 360 module inside so that one lens is on top and one at the bottom of the drone? (similar to AirSelfie 2 drone)
For me it all comes down to how well this camera(s) end up handling low light in both photos and video. A 1″ camera f/3.2 doesn’t sound too promising on paper, but the rendering of the images might have improved over the One X.
Same goes for the 360 capabilities of the One R that seem to be equal to the One X.
As far as video goes its up to bit rates and codecs. Hoping for an improvement there as well.
I’m still on the Insta360 One, but if the stills/video quality on the One R ends up being on par with One X I’m not sure the modularity alone will make me updgrade. Guess the complete package will cost a pretty penny. 🙂
Oh! And there’s also the important question of Andriod app quality. The line “Android compability coming soon” just doesn’t work these days. Unless you want to risk having bought a camera that ends up crippled due to incompability and lack of manufacturer interest to fix the situation.
I think I finally figured this one out. I had been looking at this all wrong with my 3D corrupted eyes !
I now think the whole concept behind this new camera system evolved from the idea behind the “rocket” accessory for the One X.
As you recall, shortly after the introduction of the One X, Insta 360 showed footage made with a “secret” accessory that could make some amazing “flying” shots. It turned out that this was a rocket-type accessory in which the One X could be mounted.
Needless to say, even though the footage shot with such an accessory was impressive, no doubt users always worried the camera might land on rough terrain that could damage the lens. Insta360 realized that as well and thought “What if we designed a drone around the 360 camera instead of a rocket ? We could then control the flight – and safe landing – of the camera !”
So I think that’s how this camera was conceived: The body of the camera was removed and a twin lens module was designed that could fit at the center of a custom-designed drone (and interface with it). But this same lens module could also be used as a regular handheld 360 camera – connecting the lens module instead to a module with a display and a battery base (the one we are shown in the renderings).
Once they had all this worked out, they figured they could also have another lens unit using that same core module and base – this one with a single longer lens – for action cam use.
But there is no possibility of either 3D or VR180 with this camera.
Well, look at that. I wasn’t even right about their having designed a sleek drone in which a 360 lens module would fit. I just saw a leaked photo of the drone set-up and it’s a massive contraption mounted around a DJI drone and where the 360 module is split into two parts – one being mounted at the top and the other being mounted at the bottom. So they do not have their own custom drone contrary to what the teaser seemed to imply.
I find hard to believe this clunky solution is the best they came up with. For one thing, the contraption appears to be designed to fit one specific drone model only. If you don’t own that one, you’re out of luck. I hope this picture is actually just a proof of concept and the final version will be more streamlined…
Actually I saw one leakes render where two modules with wide lens are mounted together in parallel. So I’m still hoping. And I guess it shouldn’t be a problem if the dron mount with top and bottom camera is real.
The “no film school” article and the Insta360 introduction clip both show three lens modules that mount to a “core” that has a display and contains the processor.
Two lens modules with only a single lens each feature lenses that are NOT 180 degrees and are for regular action shooting – GoPro style. The third module features two 180 (or more) lenses – one on each side.
Even though it would be possible to put two of these side by side, I don’t see how they could be connected together because they still need that “core” module to work. So there would need to be three modules and yet there appears to be no way to connect all three together.
As to that drone mount, it’s very ambiguous. It does show two separate lens modules, but the picture of the 360 module shows a single unit with lenses on both sides. There are no seems suggesting that this 360 module can be split into two.
I don’t see, with the current configurations shown, an option that would allow VR180 shooting.
You were right, Jenda. Insta360 has just announced a 3D mount coming in February that will allow shooting 3D with any of the camera modules – two of each, of course !
And I also agree that for VR180, it will use the two-module version used in the drone configuration.
That is great, it would be a shame to have it modular and not to allow shooting in 180VR. It is the best format for headsets. But the mentioned render didn’t show the 3D mount. And in my opinion that mount seems to me that it has bigger lens separation than would be best for 3D shooting. For example it won’t work well for close objects, but we’ll see.
> But the mentioned render didn’t show the 3D mount.
The 3D mount is shown on the Insta360 page on the One R. You have to scroll way down at the bottom and you will see it at the left.
> And in my opinion that mount seems to me that it has bigger lens separation than would be best for 3D shooting
I am not sure now… Did you see the mount or not ? You are right that there is a space between the left and right lens module but since these modules are quite small, the resulting interaxial should remain within the boundaries of average human eye separation.
> For example it won’t work well for close objects
Actually close range shooting is no problem with VR180 using a”normal” lens separation (between 60 and 70mm). It’s only problematic with regular 3D shooting because of the limited FOV that would crop out close range subject matter.
Yes I saw it on the official web site. It looks like the distance should be theoretically 36 + 32.4 = 68.4mm. So yes it should be OK then. I haven’t checked dimensions of those modules. They look bigger in all those videos and photos.
In case you can’t wait for tomorrow…
Spoiler alert: The drone teaser was just for a mount that makes the drone disappear.
If the leaked info is accurate, I’m disappointed – was really hoping for an improved 360 camera with 8k 360 and 3d 180 option.
From the spec posted, the 360 module is not as good as the x (f2.8 vs f2.0 and the same resolution).
Will wait for the official information to come out, but it really doesn’t look like it’s going to fill the role I was looking for.
Video of One R leaked
No VR180 what a bummer!
3D and VR180 mount coming in February ! 🙂
I would like to post photographs and have them enlarged. I know I can click on the sides of the photo, drag and make them bigger- but this always results in my photo looking grainy. How can I make them bigger without losing the clarity?
Hi there Joyce. If you want to enlarge, I recommend using the 4K mod or 1-inch mod instead. You’ll be able to enlarge them with less loss of detail than with the 360 mod. Best regards, Mic
